The South Bay has fewer hotel rooms than a coastline this busy would suggest, and they cluster in three places: the beach cities near the pier, the Redondo harbor, and the Palos Verdes coast. Where you book determines how much of the area you can reach on foot, which matters more here than it looks on a map.
Where should you stay when visiting the South Bay?
Stay in Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach if you want to walk to the pier, the Strand and the restaurants. Stay at the Redondo harbor if you want the marina and easier parking. Stay on the Palos Verdes coast if you want the resort and the views and do not mind driving for everything else. The airport corridor in El Segundo is the value option and the right one for a short trip built around flights.

What is the best hotel in Hermosa Beach?
Hotel Hermosa at 2515 Pacific Coast Highway is the one we send people to most often. It is an 81 room boutique property, independently run rather than flagged, with rooms built around a beach inspired look rather than a chain template, and it sits close enough to walk down to the pier and Pier Plaza without dealing with the parking problem that defines a Hermosa weekend.
That last point is the real argument for it. Hermosa Beach parking on a summer Saturday is genuinely difficult, and a hotel you can walk from changes the trip. Guests park once and do not move the car again.
The other Hermosa options sit closer to the water and price accordingly. Beach House Hotel is an all suite property directly on the Strand, less than two blocks from the pier and in the middle of the beach volleyball world. Sea Sprite Beach Club runs 34 coastal rooms and suites right on the sand.
Where should you stay in Manhattan Beach?
Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach is the downtown option, a design led boutique hotel within walking distance of the pier, the Strand and the downtown restaurants. It is the Manhattan Beach equivalent of the Hotel Hermosa argument: stay in the walkable core and stop thinking about the car.
westdrift Manhattan Beach sits east of downtown as an Autograph Collection property with more grounds and more space, and it suits a longer stay, a group, or anyone who wants a resort footprint at a lower rate than the coast commands. You will drive to the beach from there.
What is there at the Redondo Beach harbor?
The Portofino Hotel and Marina sits on its own peninsula in King Harbor with water on both sides, which makes it the most distinctly Redondo place to stay. Shade Hotel Redondo Beach is the boutique option a short walk away, alongside the harbor restaurants and the pier.
The harbor is the practical choice for anyone who wants to be on the water without fighting for a space every time they return. Parking here works in a way it does not two miles north.
Is Terranea worth it?
Terranea Resort at 100 Terranea Way in Rancho Palos Verdes is the only full resort in the South Bay, 582 rooms spread across 102 clifftop acres on the Palos Verdes coast, open since 2009. It has its own coves, a nine hole golf course, several restaurants and spa facilities, and views across to Catalina.
The honest trade is this: you are staying somewhere that works as a destination in its own right, and you are twenty to thirty minutes from the beach cities with no way to reach them except by car. For a weekend built around the resort, it is unmatched here. For a trip built around the Strand, the piers and the restaurants, book down the hill and visit Terranea for a meal instead.
Can you rent an Airbnb in the South Bay?
Sometimes, and the answer differs by city more sharply than anywhere else on this site. Most of the South Bay’s beach cities prohibit short-term rentals in residential zones outright. One of those bans was struck down by a court in 2026 and the position there is genuinely unsettled. If you are booking a stay, or thinking about buying a property to rent out, this is the section to read twice.

What happened in Hermosa Beach
Hermosa Beach prohibited short-term vacation rentals in its residential coastal zone. In Koerner v. City of Hermosa Beach, the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled that blanket ban unenforceable, and on 12 May 2026 the City Council voted 4 to 1 not to appeal.
The ruling did not say Hermosa Beach can never restrict short-term rentals in the coastal zone. It said the City has to do it through the proper channel, meaning either a coastal development permit or an amendment to its Local Coastal Program certified by the California Coastal Commission. That is the same mechanism described on our California Coastal Commission page, and it is a good illustration of why that agency matters to ordinary property decisions here.
Where that leaves things today: coastal zone short-term rentals in Hermosa Beach are not currently citable, and no collection regime is in place for them. The residential ban outside the coastal zone still stands. This is a live situation and the City retains the option to pursue a properly certified restriction, so anyone making a purchase decision on the strength of it should take legal advice rather than rely on a web page, including this one.
What this means if you are buying
Short-term rental income should not be assumed anywhere in the beach cities without checking the specific address against the specific city’s current rule. We have seen buyers price an income stream into an offer that the city does not permit. The safer framing in most of the South Bay is a 31 day or longer furnished rental, which is legal in Redondo Beach and is how a good deal of the local corporate and relocation housing actually works.
If short-term rental income is central to your plan, tell us early. It changes which cities and which zones are worth looking at, and it is considerably cheaper to know that before you are in escrow.

- Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach. Design-led and walkable to the pier and the downtown restaurants, with a rooftop bar that draws locals rather than only guests.
- Shade Hotel Redondo Beach. The harbor sibling. Same design sensibility, alongside the King Harbor restaurants, and far easier parking.
- The Portofino Hotel and Marina. Not boutique in the design sense, but on its own peninsula in King Harbor with water on both sides, which nothing else here offers.
The pattern across all of them: the smaller independents sit in the walkable cores and the larger properties sit where there is room to park. Which matters to you depends entirely on whether you intend to drive during your stay.
Where should you stay while house hunting in the South Bay?
Book in the area you are considering, not the area with the best rate. Neighborhoods here change character within a few blocks, and mornings and evenings tell you more than a midday showing does.
- Looking at Hermosa or the Manhattan Beach Sand Section. Stay in downtown Hermosa or downtown Manhattan Beach and walk it at 7 am and again at 9 pm.
- Looking at North Redondo, Torrance or the Golden Hills. The Redondo harbor hotels put you close without the beach city rate, and the drive into those areas is short.
- Looking on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Terranea works well here, because the drive from the resort to any Peninsula community is the same drive you would be making as a resident.
- Looking in El Segundo or near the airport corridor. Stay in El Segundo itself. The difference between the west side of Sepulveda and the east side is something you have to stand in to understand.
