Gardena is an incorporated city in Los Angeles County, incorporated September 11, 1930 by combining the communities of Gardena, Moneta and Strawberry Park as a Sixth Class City. State legislation reclassified it a General Law City in 1955.

Who governs Gardena?

The City of Gardena, through its Community Development Department — Planning and Zoning, and Building & Safety — with a Planning & Environmental Commission. The city runs its own police department and its own transit system, GTrans. Fire protection comes from the Los Angeles County Fire Department rather than a city department.

What should a buyer verify here?

Cardroom land use. Gardena’s own economic development office documents it as the first city in California to legalize cardrooms, and it has two operating casinos. That is a land-use and municipal-revenue feature specific to this city, and proximity to it is a measurable fact worth establishing for a specific address.

Rent mediation. Gardena operates a Rent Mediation program through the City Manager’s office. If you are buying anything tenant-occupied, read that program before you write, not after.

Schools

Gardena is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District — every public school listed on the City of Gardena’s own schools page is an LAUSD school, and LAUSD’s Local District South is headquartered at 1208 Magnolia Avenue in Gardena. Attendance areas are set by the district and change over time — verify the current assignment for a specific address with the district.

Where Gardena sits

Gardena is part of the Greater South Bay, bordering Torrance to the south and west.

What is there to do in Gardena?

Gardena programs most of its public calendar out of the City Hall complex on West 162nd Street, with a second cluster at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute a few blocks away.

  • Gardena Jazz Festival. A day in late August, 9am to 7pm, at Rowley Memorial Park, 13220 South Van Ness Avenue. The 2026 edition was the 23rd.
  • Food, Wine and Brew Festival. The last Saturday in September, noon to 7pm, at the Gardena City Hall complex, 1700 West 162nd Street.
  • Harvest Festival. The first Saturday in October, 10am to 1pm, also at the City Hall complex.
  • Summer Block Party. The first Tuesday in August, 6pm to 8pm, held as Gardena’s National Night Out event at the City Hall complex.
  • Sounds and Bites Summer Series. A Friday evening each month from May through August, 6pm to 9pm, at 1112 West Gardena Boulevard.
  • Keep Gardena Beautiful Day. The third Saturday in September, 8am to noon, at sites across the city.
  • Gardena Farmers Market. Mondays year-round at the Kaiser Permanente Gardena Medical Offices, 15446 South Western Avenue. Published hours differ between sources, so confirm before making the trip.
  • Tuesday farmers market. Tuesdays, 10am to 2pm, year-round at 18600 South Figueroa Street. It is branded as the Carson market, but the address is in Gardena.
  • GVJCI Matsuri. The last Saturday in June, 10am to 7pm, at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 West 162nd Street.
  • Day of Remembrance. Each February at the GVJCI Main Hall, marking the anniversary of Executive Order 9066.
  • Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve strolls. A guided stroll the second Sunday monthly, 1pm to 4pm, and a self-guided walk the fourth Saturday, 9am to noon. Both are free and run year-round at 1202 West 170th Street.

Two corrections worth making. Listing sites still show a Saturday farmers market at Holly Park Church and a Wednesday market at the Nakaoka Community Center. Neither appears on the state’s current certified market list. The long-running Holly Park market relocated to the Kaiser site and now runs Mondays.

What should buyers know about Gardena homes?

Position is the practical story. Gardena sits inland between Torrance, Hawthorne and the harbor communities, with freeway access in several directions. Gardena homes consequently price below the coastal cities while keeping much of the same regional access.

Housing stock runs heavily to postwar single-family construction on regular lots, with pockets of newer multi-unit development along the commercial corridors. Gardena homes in those corridor-adjacent areas sit closer to future density than interior blocks do, which is worth checking against a specific parcel.
