The South Bay is one of the strongest wedding markets in Los Angeles County and one of the least understood, because the venue list changes more than almost any other category. Two much-photographed Peninsula venues are not currently available, and several of the best options are civic buildings and gardens that never advertise. Here is the honest version.
What are the main wedding venues in the South Bay?

What happened to Wayfarers Chapel?
This is the first question most South Bay couples ask, so it is worth answering directly. Wayfarers Chapel is not currently available as a wedding venue. The Lloyd Wright glass chapel on the Palos Verdes coast was carefully dismantled after accelerating land movement in the Portuguese Bend landslide area made its site unsafe, with the intention of preserving and eventually rebuilding it.
It remains listed as a bookable venue on a large number of wedding websites and directories. Anyone planning around it should contact the chapel organization directly for the current position rather than relying on a listing.
Can you get married on the beach?
Yes, with a permit, and the rules differ by city. Each beach city and Los Angeles County has its own process for beach ceremony permits, with limits on guest counts, structures, chairs, amplified sound, alcohol and timing.
The things that catch couples out here:
- Alcohol is prohibited on the beach and pier in Hermosa Beach, and the same applies broadly across the beach cities. A beach ceremony and a beach reception are different propositions.
- Smoking, including vaping, is prohibited on the beach, pier, Pier Plaza, the Strand and all parks and public spaces in Hermosa Beach.
- The beach is public. A permit reserves your right to hold the ceremony, not to clear the sand around it. Summer weekends are extremely busy.
- The Strand carries constant traffic. The Marvin Braude bike path runs directly behind most ceremony locations, all day.
The workable version is an early morning or late afternoon ceremony on a weekday or shoulder season date, with the reception somewhere with walls. Start with the city’s community services or recreation department, not a wedding planner’s website.
Who issues the permit depends on who operates the sand
This is the part almost every wedding blog gets wrong. In the South Bay the beach and the city are not the same landlord. Most of the sand is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, not by the city whose name is on the beach.
- Manhattan Beach. The City’s own Special Event page states that events on the beach are permitted through Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors and tells you to contact the County first. The City handles events off the sand: weddings and gatherings under 200 people go through the Reservation Desk at 310-802-5448, and events over 200 people on public property go through a City Special Event Application.
- Hermosa Beach. The exception. Hermosa permits its own public spaces, including the beach, Pier Plaza, the parks and the Strand, through the Parks and Recreation Department under the City’s Special Events Policy Guide. Hermosa does not appear anywhere in the County’s beach permit rules, which is the giveaway.
- Redondo Beach. The open sand runs through the County. The City’s Community Services Department handles its own facilities, which is a separate and often better answer: Seaside Lagoon, Veterans Park and the Historic Library.
- Torrance Beach. County.
- Dockweiler State Beach, the long stretch north of Manhattan Beach past El Segundo and Playa del Rey. County, and the only local beach with fire rings.
- The Peninsula. Different regime again. The shoreline parks and bluff overlooks belong to Palos Verdes Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, so the reservation runs through that city rather than the County. Terranea and Trump National are private property and book directly.
The County process, step by step
- Call the Permit Section at (424) 526-7880 to schedule your date and location before you do anything else.
- Apply online at beaches.lacounty.gov, no earlier than 90 days and no later than three weeks before the date. Submitting an application does not hold the date.
- Produce insurance. An original hard copy certificate of general liability at $1,000,000 with a $2,000,000 aggregate, naming the County of Los Angeles as an additional insured. If you would rather not arrange your own, the County runs a Special Event Liability Insurance Program you can buy into instead.
- Pay in advance. Permit fees plus a refundable security deposit sized to your event. Parking is not included and is paid per entry as posted.
- Add the other agencies if they apply. A Fire Marshal permit for tents over 200 square feet or canopies over 400. A Building and Safety permit for tents or canopies over 300 square feet, for bleachers or scaffolding, or for a stage more than 30 inches off the ground. County Public Works if anything touches the bike path.
A permit is required at all, rather than optional, once you hit any one of these: 50 or more people, a canopy larger than 10 by 10, staging, amplified sound, a generator, a caterer, a rental company, or alcohol.
What the County will not approve
Worth reading before you fall in love with a plan.
- No alcohol permits are issued at Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance Beach, Dockweiler or Venice. Where alcohol is allowed it is catered only, never BYOB, roped off, served in opaque containers of 12 ounces or less, with one uniformed security guard per fifty guests of drinking age, and service stops an hour before the event ends.
- Live amplified bands are prohibited on every County beach. DJs are additionally prohibited at Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance Beach and Dockweiler. What is left is background music with the speakers facing the water.
- Amplified sound cannot start before 9:00 a.m., or 10:00 a.m. at Manhattan Beach, and has to stop by 9:00 p.m. At Manhattan Beach you need a second amplified sound permit from the Police Department on top of the County’s approval.
- No fires or cooking on the sand, tiki torches included. Cooking is prohibited outright at Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance Beach, Royal Palms and White Point. Dockweiler has the fire rings.
- Fireworks are prohibited. So are animals, on the beach and in the parking lot.
None of that rules out a beach wedding. It rules out a beach reception. The couples who are happiest with how the day went tend to hold the ceremony on the sand and walk everyone to a restaurant, a hotel terrace or a civic room afterward, which is also why the venues further up this page matter.
The license is a separate errand
The permit is for the place. The license is for the marriage, and it comes from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk, not from any city.
- Both parties apply together, in person, with valid photo identification. Appointments can be booked up to three weeks ahead at any of the seven branches.
- A license is valid for 90 days from issue.
- A public license requires one witness at the ceremony. A confidential license does not require a witness.
- If you want the whole thing done in one visit, the County offers express ceremonies by appointment, 45 minutes, and will supply a witness for $20 if you do not bring one.
The two clocks line up conveniently. The license is good for 90 days and the County beach permit window opens at 90 days and closes at three weeks out. Book the location first, then start both applications around the ten week mark and you are comfortably inside every deadline.

What about civic and garden venues?
This is where the value is, and most couples never look.
- South Coast Botanic Garden runs several event spaces across its 87 acres, and it is the most distinctive garden setting in the South Bay.
- City-run facilities. The Torrance Cultural Arts Center, community centers and civic buildings across the beach cities rent for events, generally at civic rather than commercial rates, and several have genuinely good rooms.
- Point Vicente Park and Civic Center in Rancho Palos Verdes sits on the bluff with an interpretive center and ocean frontage.
- Yacht and beach clubs. Several operate on the harbor in Redondo Beach. Most require a member sponsor, so ask before you fall in love with one.
What are the venues people miss?
The resort and hotel list is the one every wedding site publishes. These are the ones that get booked by people who already live here, and several are considerably better value.
Redondo Beach Historic Library, Veterans Park
A Spanish-style historic building at 309 Esplanade, sitting in Veterans Park above the water. It came through a substantial renovation completing in spring 2026 with new windows and roofing, fresh exterior paint and stucco, and fully renovated interior spaces. It handles outdoor ceremonies, indoor receptions with dinner and dancing, and indoor-outdoor cocktail hours, and takes up to around 320 guests.
It is the most distinctive historic building available for weddings in the beach cities, and the renovation means it is currently in better condition than it has been in decades.
The Catalina Room, Redondo Beach
At 128 South Catalina Avenue, a block from the pier, in a building originally put up in the 1940s and renovated as an event space. The main ballroom runs about 5,000 square feet under a vaulted ceiling, seating roughly 320 for dinner or up to 475 theater style, with additional rooms that allow a ceremony, a cocktail hour and a dinner reception to happen in sequence without anyone leaving the building.
It is operated by MA Center LA, a non-profit, which is part of why the pricing sits below what a comparable room at a hotel would cost.
Torrance Cultural Arts Center and the Pine Wind Japanese Garden
The most underused wedding setting in the South Bay. The Torrance Cultural Arts Center campus holds the Toyota Meeting Hall, the George Nakano Theatre, garden meeting rooms and two outdoor plazas, and it includes the Pine Wind Japanese Garden, designed by Takeo Uesugi with two waterfalls, a koi pond and stone pathways, plus a two-tiered amphitheater that seats around 60 with room to add chairs.

Ken Miller Recreation Center, Torrance
The honest answer to “where can we do this without spending resort money.” At 3341 Torrance Boulevard, the auditorium runs about 3,100 square feet with a built-in stage, holding up to 325 for dancing, 210 for dining or 180 for dining and dancing. The adjacent 2,000 square foot Assembly Room has hardwood floors and takes around 100 for dining.
It is a civic facility at civic rates. It will not photograph like Terranea. It will also not cost like Terranea, and for a couple prioritizing guest count over setting it is the most sensible room in the South Bay.
Where do cultural and community celebrations happen?
The South Bay has substantial Japanese, Korean, Indian, Filipino and Latino communities, and a great deal of celebration happens in venues that never appear on a wedding directory because they are community institutions first.
- The Pine Wind Japanese Garden and Torrance Cultural Arts Center sit at the center of this, and the Japanese garden in particular was built as an authentic landscape rather than a decorative one.
- The Catalina Room is run by MA Center LA and serves as that organization’s event space alongside its commercial bookings.
- Community and cultural centers across Torrance, Gardena and the inland cities hold halls that are regularly used for weddings and receptions. These are rarely listed on wedding platforms, they are booked by phone or in person, and they are often the best value in the area.
- Places of worship across the South Bay frequently have attached halls available to members and sometimes to the wider community.
If a cultural or religious setting matters to your celebration, the search that works is not a wedding directory. It is asking within the community, and asking us. We will make the calls.
Where should you look for a smaller budget?
Four directions, roughly in order of how much you save.
- City-run facilities. Ken Miller in Torrance, recreation and community centers in every South Bay city, and the Torrance Cultural Arts Center rooms. Civic rates, resident discounts in several cities, and far more availability than the coastal venues.
- Weekday and off-season dates. The same room on a Friday in February against a Saturday in July is a different price everywhere in this market.
- A beach ceremony with an indoor reception. The permit costs are modest compared with a venue ceremony fee, and it separates the expensive part from the free part.
- Park and garden settings. Several South Bay parks rent picnic and event areas at a fraction of venue pricing. Our parks by city page covers what each city runs.

Where do guests stay?
The constraint nobody plans for. The South Bay has fewer hotel rooms than a coastline this busy suggests, and a summer weekend wedding competes with everyone else visiting. Block rooms early.
The practical geography: Hermosa Beach and downtown Manhattan Beach put guests within walking distance of a ceremony and dinner, the Redondo harbor hotels are easier for parking and usually better value, and Terranea works when the wedding is at Terranea and nowhere else. One date warning worth building into your planning. Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, the first weekend in May and late September are when Fiesta Hermosa, BeachLife and the Lobster Festival take over parts of the beach cities. Hotel rates rise, parking disappears and streets close. Check our festivals page against your shortlist of dates before you sign anything.
Wedding venue availability, permit rules and fees change frequently, and at least one prominent South Bay venue is currently unavailable while remaining widely listed.
