Which South Bay Restaurants Allow Dogs on the Patio?

Five places in the South Bay put a dog policy in writing on their own website. Nothing in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach made that list. Plenty of spots there will seat you with a dog, but none of them says so on paper, which is a different thing when you have driven across town with a retriever in the back.

Which places state a dog policy in writing?

Lazy Dog, Torrance. 3525 W Carson St. (310) 921-6080. The clearest policy of any venue here: published patio rules, leashed and within reach, water brought out, and a dog menu with prices on it. Patio only, service dogs excepted.

Terranea Resort, Rancho Palos Verdes. Nelson’s and sea beans. Dogs are permitted outdoors at both, leashed everywhere on the property, and not on tables or chairs. The resort publishes breed restrictions, so read those before you drive out.

Project Barley, Lomita. 2308 Pacific Coast Hwy. Dogs are allowed inside at the Lomita brewery, and they explain why: the health rules that bind restaurants do not bind them. Dogs are not allowed at either Redondo Beach location, so go to Lomita.

Monkish Brewing, Torrance. 20311 S Western Ave. Calls its tasting room dog friendly and names an outdoor patio, without saying patio only.

Rock and Brews, El Segundo. 143 Main St. Calls its outdoor patio dog friendly.

Why is nothing in the beach cities on this list?

Because we print only what a venue states itself, and no restaurant in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach publishes a dog policy on its own site. Search any aggregator and you will find dozens of beach city listings marked dog friendly. Those listings are written by other customers, not by the restaurant, and a server on a Tuesday is not bound by them.

The practical move in the beach cities is a phone call that morning. Ask whether the patio seats dogs today, because the answer changes with the manager on shift and the patio layout, and nobody updates a sign when it does.

Which ones are worth a call?

The Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach allows leashed dogs in its rooms and public areas for a fee, but says nothing about whether that reaches the restaurant patios. Worth asking, because it is the closest thing the beach cities have to a written policy.

Several venues that appeared on dog-friendly roundups could not be confirmed and are left off deliberately: Strand Brewing in Torrance, The Whale and Ale in San Pedro, whose domain now resolves to an unrelated site, and Catalina Coffee in Redondo Beach. Call before you count on any of them.

What changes without notice?

Patio rules, mostly. A venue that seated you with a dog in June can change its mind in July, and the website is the last thing to catch up. Terranea’s breed restrictions are the other thing to check rather than assume, since they are published and they do exclude some dogs.

Call ahead either way. It costs two minutes and it is the difference between lunch and a drive home.

Where else can your dog go?

Off the patio and onto grass: our South Bay Dog Parks page covers the fenced off-leash parks and the beach rules, which catch out almost every newcomer. For a day up the hill, South Coast Botanic Garden admits pet dogs only on designated days, booked in advance.

The patios that publish a dog policy, plus Rosie’s Dog Beach and the Garden’s dog days, are in The Local’s Guide to Pets in the South Bay. Download it here.
