Summer Camps for Kids in the South Bay

The single most important thing to know about South Bay summer camps is that the good ones fill in winter. The flagship program here, Junior Lifeguards, runs its swim tests in March for a summer that starts in June. If you arrive in May looking for options, you are choosing from what is left.

What is the Junior Lifeguard program?

The Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguard program is the defining South Bay summer experience, run by the Los Angeles County Fire Department for young people aged 9 through 17. It teaches water safety, swimming, body surfing, surfing, physical conditioning, competition skills, first aid, CPR, lifesaving rescue technique and the use of professional lifesaving equipment.

It operates at beaches along the county coastline including the South Bay beaches, and it is the reason so many people who grew up here are genuinely competent in the ocean rather than just comfortable near it.

The timeline is the catch. For a recent season, registration for returning Junior Lifeguards opened in early February and closed in early March, with swim tests held on separate dates through March and into April. A summer program with a March deadline catches out every family that moves here in spring.

There is a swim test. It is a real test, not a formality. Questions go to the Junior Lifeguard office at (310) 939-7214, and the county publishes current dates each year.

What camps do the cities run?

Every South Bay city runs its own recreation camps through the summer, and they are the backbone of the season: affordable, close to home, and generally weekly rather than all-summer commitments.

  • Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance and El Segundo each run parks and recreation summer programs, typically covering sports, general day camp and specialty weeks.
  • Residency matters. Most cities open registration to residents before non-residents and charge different rates. If you are moving between cities, check which side of the line you will be on before registration opens.
  • Redondo Beach runs a Junior Lifeguard camp of its own in addition to the County program, which is a useful alternative for younger or less experienced swimmers.

Start with your own city’s community services or recreation department page. These programs rarely advertise beyond the city’s own channels, which is exactly why they are easier to get into than the well-known names.

What about surf and beach camps?

Surf camps run all summer across Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, from half-day introductions to week-long programs, operated by independent surf schools rather than the cities. Beach volleyball camps are similarly well established, which is unsurprising given the South Bay is one of the sport’s global centers.

For anyone new to the area, the sequence that works is a surf camp first to build water confidence, then Junior Lifeguards the following year once your child can pass the swim test. Going straight to the test without ocean experience is how children get discouraged.

Are there arts, science and nature camps?

Yes, and they are the underused half of the South Bay summer.

  • Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, San Pedro. Marine science programming from an institution that reopened its main hall after an $8 million renovation.
  • South Coast Botanic Garden, Palos Verdes Peninsula. Nature and garden programs across 87 acres.
  • Madrona Marsh Preserve, Torrance. Nature education at a working vernal marsh, free to visit and unusually hands-on.
  • Torrance Cultural Arts Center and the city arts programs. Theatre, music and visual art.
  • Palos Verdes Art Center. Art classes for young people alongside its adult program.

These tend to have smaller cohorts than sports camps and they fill through word of mouth, so get on mailing lists in the winter.

When do you need to register?

Program type Registration usually opens Practical advice
Junior Lifeguards February, with swim tests in March and April The hardest deadline of the year. Diarize it in January
City recreation camps Spring, residents first Check your city’s schedule. Resident windows open earlier
Surf and sports camps Spring, rolling Popular weeks go first. Mid-summer weeks last longest
Museum and nature programs Spring Small cohorts. Join the mailing list rather than watching the website

If you are relocating and your move completes in spring or summer, assume you have missed the main registration windows for that year and plan a lighter first summer. It is a solvable problem if you know about it in advance, and a miserable surprise if you do not.

Program dates, ages, fees and registration windows change every year, and residency rules differ by city. The dates described above reflect a recent season and are illustrative rather than current. Confirm this year’s dates with the Los Angeles County Fire Department Junior Lifeguard program or your city’s recreation department before planning around them.
