Pickleball arrived in the South Bay faster than the cities could build for it, and the result is a patchwork: a few parks with real dedicated courts, a lot of basketball courts with painted lines and no nets, one large dedicated center in Torrance, and several cities part way through funding permanent facilities. Knowing which is which saves a wasted drive.
Where can you play pickleball in the South Bay?
The South Bay has free first come first served public pickleball in Torrance, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Rancho Palos Verdes, plus one large dedicated pay to play facility, the South Bay Tennis and Pickleball Center in Torrance. Torrance has the deepest public supply. Redondo Beach has the most shared courts and is building a permanent facility at Aviation Park.

Which city has the most pickleball courts?
Torrance, and it is not close. The city runs free dedicated courts at Walteria Park, six of them with both open play and senior sessions, four at Sur La Brea Park open daily from 8 am to 8 pm, and two at Charles H. Wilson Park.
Torrance also permits pickleball on six of its basketball courts Monday through Friday until 2 pm, at La Carretera on West 186th Street, La Romeria on Inglewood Avenue, Delthorne on Spencer Street, Wilson Park on Crenshaw Boulevard, Lago Seco on West 235th Street and DePortola Park on Lazy Meadow Drive. Bring your own net for those, because the city does not supply one.
A further eight standard sized courts with night lighting, fencing and shaded viewing are in construction at Wilson Park, which will make it the largest municipal pickleball site in the area when it opens.
Is there a dedicated pickleball facility?
Yes. The South Bay Tennis and Pickleball Center at 25924 Rolling Hills Road in Torrance is the region’s hub, with nine dedicated pickleball courts plus 28 further courts carrying blended lines. It runs beginner and advanced group classes, private lessons, court rentals and open play for members and non members, adult leagues and women’s ladders.
For anyone who wants a guaranteed court and organized play rather than whoever turns up, this is the answer in the South Bay. Everything else is first come first served.
What is the pickleball situation in Redondo Beach?
Redondo Beach has the most shared court space and the least dedicated space, and the city is openly working on it. Reservations are now available for the pickleball courts at Alta Vista Park, booked through the City. Beyond that, play happens on dual use courts:
- Perry Park. Three pickleball courts marked on the basketball courts, first come first served, with designated times posted for each sport.
- Franklin Park. Three courts total, two sharing the basketball court on posted time splits and one sharing the volleyball court with no designated split, so players work it out between them.
- Anderson Park. One court on the half court basketball surface, subject to scheduled city classes and camps.
- Dale Page Park. One court beside the basketball court.
The City does not provide nets at the shared locations. The permanent fix is coming: City Council allocated $275,000 for a pickleball facility at Aviation Park in the FY 2025-26 budget, on top of $320,000 allocated the prior year, funding design and preliminary construction. It is a long term project, so in the meantime bring a net and check the posted time splits.
Where can you play in the beach cities?
El Segundo has the strongest free setup in the beach cities: eight courts with permanent nets at 401 Sheldon Street, no fee. Manhattan Beach play centers on Manhattan Heights Community Center and the courts at Manhattan Beach Middle School, with additional space at Robinson Elementary. Hermosa Beach has two courts with permanent nets at 861 Valley Drive on the greenbelt.
On the Peninsula, Rancho Palos Verdes offers courts at Point Vicente Park and at the Ladera Linda Community Center, and Rolling Hills Estates has four at Ernie Howlett Park. School site courts follow school schedules, so weekday daytime access is limited.
What should you bring?
A paddle and balls, always. A portable net for anything described as a shared or basketball court, which covers most of Redondo Beach and six Torrance park locations. Courts fill on weekend mornings across every city, so early is the difference between playing and waiting. Several cities prohibit private instruction on public courts without written consent, Redondo Beach among them, so a paid lesson belongs at the Torrance center rather than a city park.
