The city was incorporated on December 7, 1912, and its name was settled in 1902 by a coin flip between three competing developers. Sand from its dunes was loaded onto Santa Fe Railroad cars in the 1920s and 1930s and shipped to Waikiki, with more of it going into the Los Angeles Coliseum and sections of Pacific Coast Highway. The modern beach volleyball movement began here in the 1930s, the first surfboard shop in the continental United States opened here in 1949, and The Strand runs 2.1 miles as part of the Marvin Braude Bike Trail.
