Beyond the neighborhood school, several districts here run programs a student applies to rather than is zoned into. These sit outside the boundary maps entirely.
What public magnet and specialty options exist?
Two are worth knowing about specifically, and both are tuition free.
California Academy of Mathematics and Science, on the CSU Dominguez Hills campus in Carson, opened in 1990 as a joint venture of the CSU Chancellor’s Office, CSU Dominguez Hills and Long Beach Unified. Its consortium attendance area explicitly includes Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified, Torrance and Wiseburn, which means Peninsula and Torrance families are eligible. Published requirements include completion of Algebra 1 or higher and a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Non Long Beach applicants apply directly to the school and need an interdistrict permit from their home district.
Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy in Wilmington sits on the Los Angeles Harbor College campus and is an LAUSD early college program where students can concurrently earn an Associate of Arts degree. Applications run through the LAUSD Choices system with an assessment administered in December.
Across the Harbor area, LAUSD runs magnets at San Pedro High School including marine science, police academy, visual and performing arts and STEAM, at Narbonne in Harbor City including a software and gaming academy, at Banning in Wilmington including firefighter and EMS, and at Carson and Gardena high schools. Applications go through LAUSD Choices, which uses a priority point system rather than first come first served: points accrue for matriculation, time on a waitlist, and schools designated as overcrowded or PHBAO. Those points are the whole game, and families who understand them early do meaningfully better in the process.
Independent, parochial and early learning programs change more often than public districts do. Enrollment windows, grade spans and tuition move year to year, and a school listed here may have changed either since we last checked. Confirm anything that matters to you with the school directly.
