Can You Bring a Dog to South Coast Botanic Garden?

Dogs enter South Coast Botanic Garden on its designated Dog Walking days.

Verified October 2, 2026

No, not on an ordinary day. South Coast Botanic Garden does not admit pet dogs during regular hours. Professionally trained service dogs are welcome any day, emotional support animals are not, and every other dog gets in only on a designated Dog Walking day, reserved in advance. This is the detail people find out at the gate after driving up the hill, so it is worth settling before you load the car.

When are dogs allowed at the Garden?

On Dog Walking Hours days. The Garden’s ticket page puts these on the last Sunday of every month and adds that the day is subject to change at times. Its Plan Your Visit page calls the same program intermittent through the year.

Two of the Garden’s own pages disagree on how often it runs, which is reason enough to check the current listing rather than plan a month ahead on the strength of the pattern. The last-Sunday rhythm is the Garden’s own description, so treat it as the likely day and confirm before you drive.

Do you need a reservation, and what does it cost?

Reservations are required. A per-dog fee applies on top of garden admission, and the Garden does not publish the amount, so ask when you book. General admission runs up to $15 per person for non-members and members enter free. The Garden is at 26300 Crenshaw Boulevard in Rolling Hills Estates, open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with last entry at 4:30 PM, 364 days a year.

Your dog needs to be socialized and current on vaccinations and registration. If the license part is the piece you are unsure about, we break down who issues yours and what it costs in our city-by-city licensing post.

Which parts of the Garden are off limits to dogs?

Three of them, even on a dog day. Dogs are not allowed in the Bohannon Rose Garden, at the Koi Pond or in the Pollination Garden. Everywhere else they stay leashed at all times, and that includes the parking lot rather than starting at the gate.

What is Dogtoberfest?

The Garden’s own dog festival, run on weekends through October on timed tickets sold in advance, with a separate per-dog fee. It is the one time of year the Garden is built around dogs rather than making room for them.

Dates and prices are set each year and tend to go up in early September, so that is when to look rather than guessing from last year’s listing.

Where can your dog go the rest of the month?

The Peninsula has no fenced off-leash park of its own, so the honest answer is down the hill. Four fenced public off-leash parks serve the South Bay, and we cover where they are and what each one is like on our South Bay Dog Parks page.

For trail walking closer to home, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy manages about 42 miles of trail across the hill. Dog access varies by preserve rather than applying across the whole system, so check the specific preserve before you go.

Dog days at the Garden, Rosie’s Dog Beach and the patios that put their policy in writing are collected in The Local’s Guide to Pets in the South Bay. Download it here.
